The Colby Residence

Murdoch Architects

Designed to enhance the owners' enjoyment of their home's lovely setting, this project involved building a front porch with flagstone steps and low-voltage lighting, constructing a cedar pergola, installing a new front door, and cutting through 10-inch masonry and block walls to add floor-to-ceiling windows—with tooth-in-brick openings that exactly matched the style and pattern of the existing brick.

Saving a 70-year-old magnolia tree in the way of the construction was a priority that required specially created non-concrete grade-beams. In addition, the porch's concrete slabs were suspended, rather than installed on grade, to protect the tree's roots.
